About me

You are reading a page that Laurens Cerulus wrote about himself. So he will keep it short.

With almost three years of experience as an EU journalist in Brussels, Laurens started working for POLITICO in Brussels as a Web Producer in April 2015. After a year of boosting POLITICO’s web coverage in Europe — and at least four major European crises — he moved up a step to start a Reporter position in April 2016. Laurens covers the most exciting beats in town: cybersecurity, privacy and data protection. Here’s his staff bio.

Up until March 2015, he was developing crowdsourcing and data tools for the EU news & policy debates media, EurActiv. He pushed for multimedia storytelling on the website and trained the editorial team on user engagement, data visualisation and audiovisual publishing. In 2013-2014, he covered the EU elections of May 2014 from start to finish for EurActiv and reported on the institutional changeover that followed these elections.

Since 2013, he also works as a freelance journalist. He has been published in The Independent, the Sunday Times, on DW.de, in the European Voice, Monocle, the Daily Mail, the Belgian newspaper De Morgen, the Belgian magazine on international affairs MO* and other media.

He has produced radio pieces for Monocle24 and for Deutsche Welle‘s flagship programme on EU Affairs, ‘Inside Europe’. He has worked with the BBC World Service and other media as well.

He produced short TV segments as Belgium’s national correspondent for the French-German broadcaster ARTE‘s programme VoxPop, and he is part of MO* Magazine’s Young Turks project for promising reporters on international affairs.

He holds an MA degree in International Journalism at City University London and co-founded the online journalism project on European affairs, Youropa.org, while studying at City.

In his early days he was Foreign Editor for Veto, the most renowned student newspaper in Belgium. He holds an MA in History from the KU Leuven university; and one in International Relations from UCLouvain université.

This is him at work…
